Salt Water Pool
A salt water pool is a pool that has an electronic chlorinator installed in the system.
What is a salt water pool?
A salt water pool system uses a machine that takes food grade salt that is added to the pool water and turns the salt into chlorine to sanitize your pool water.
The chemical makeup of salt is sodium molecules and chloride molecules attached together (NaCl). The Salt Machine (Electronic Chlorine Generator) shoots a low voltage electrical charge into the NACL molecules and splits the Sodium away from the Chloride. The chloride molecule is basic chlorine that kills bacteria and algae. The sodium is just a by-product of the process.
Any extra chlorine that is not used to sanitize the pool water recombines with the sodium and passes through the electronic chlorinator to be split apart again and the process repeats over and over.
What are the benefits of a salt water pool?
- Levels sanitizer (chlorine) application to better control the bacteria and algae
- Achieves higher pH levels than tablet chlorine – this makes for nicer swimmer comfort, softer feeling water, no burning eyes or dried out skin and it is easier to maintain pool water balance
- You do not have to buy as much chlorine
- Feeds the chlorine automatically – means less work for you!
How to maintain
- Balance the water (bring a pool water sample to a Pleasant Pools location) Free chlorine – 1 to 3 ppm
- pH – 7.2 to 7.6
- Total Alkalinity – 80ppm to 120ppm
- Calcium Hardness – 180ppm to 300ppm
- Stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid) – 60ppm to 80ppm
- Salt Level – 3200ppm to 4000ppm (depending on the model of chlorine generator) Purchase the recommended chemicals from Pleasant Pools and Spas.
- Apply the recommended chemicals according to the recommended way.
- If the above water maintenance is not done on a regular basis the imbalance of the water can discolor and damage the pool surface and the pool equipment – there is NO WARRANTY on chemical damage to either the pool surface or the pool equipment.
- Monitor and maintain the Electronic Chlorine Generator as the manufacturer requires. (Clean cell and sensor on a regular Schedule)
- Do your swimming pool housekeeping (brush, vacuum, run the automatic pool cleaner).
- When the water temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit the Salt Generator will not produce chlorine – at that time you will need to add chlorine manually to sanitize your pool.
