Chlorine

Mastering chlorine sanitizing is a science in itself. For helpful tips, read the information below.

Initial Start-Up

  1. Vacuum and do normal housekeeping.
  2. If water is green with algae, visit your pool professional at Pleasant Pools and Spas for clean-up instructions. If water is clear, proceed with the following instructions.
  3. Add conditioner/stabilizer, 2.5 lbs per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Pour slowly into skimmer. Do not backwash for 48 hours.
  4. Add chlorine tablets to chlorine floater or automatic chlorinator.
  5. Add 1 lb. of chlorine shock per 10,000 gallons of pool water.
  6. Add 12 oz. of Algae 60 per 10,000 gallons of pool water.
  7. Let pool circulate for 24 hours. Test chlorine with test strips. The recommended range for the chlorine level is 1.0-3.0 ppm. If the chlorine level is below 1.0 ppm, then open floater or automatic chlorinator more.
  8. After filtering for 24-48 hours, bring a 12 oz. water sample to Pleasant Pools and Spas to receive water balance recommendations.

Daily Maintenance

  1. Test chlorine level using test strips.
  2. Adjust chlorine feeder to keep chlorine level in the range 1.0-3.0 ppm.

Weekly Maintenance

  1. Test pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels using test strips.
  2. Add 4 oz. of Algae 30 per 10,000 gallons of pool water.
  3. Adjust chlorine feeder to keep chlorine level in the range 1.0-3.0 ppm.
  4. Every 7-10 days, add 1 lb. of chlorine shock per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Do not swim for 24 hours. Do not shock in the middle of the day. Pre-dissolve chlorine shock in vinyl pools. If you are have clarity or algae problems try shocking more frequently.
  5. For plaster pools, pools with a heater, pools with many leaves from nearby trees, and pools with well water, add 2 oz. of metal control per 10,000 gallons of pool water.
  6. Do normal housekeeping, brush walls, vacuum, empty skimmer and pump baskets, and backwash filter if necessary.
